“When we heard of the opportunity to do a marshal takeover as a club, we jumped at the chance! As a triathlon club for beginners and improvers with a fab junior section too, parkrun is right up our street! Most of us have run at Wyre Forest many times before and used it on several occasions as our ‘Graduation Run’ at the end of our couch to 5k courses so we were really keen to give something back!
Tri Energy members came out in force to support the marshal takeover and I think we had a record breaking number of volunteers! We compiled a list of all our names and parkrun numbers to send over to Andie & Jo (the usual Run Directors) and received so much support from them in assigning roles, knowing what to do, planning the race briefing and so on. We were in awe of these ladies and what they do week in week out to make parkrun possible! There really is a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make everything run so smoothly on the day!
Our Friday afternoon was spent baking biscuits with bright green icing (Tri Energy colours!) and then the alarm was set bright and early for the main event on Saturday! When we looked out the window and saw snow….we couldn’t believe it! I momentarily thought we might have more marshals than parkrunners! Who would be crazy enough to run in this weather?!?!- As it turns out 164 of you were!!
Ade had already set the park run course out by the time we arrived at 8:20am! Tri Energy members arrived all eager to help and we gathered under the shelter from the icy wind and snow to brighten up our morning with tons of high vis marshalling jackets and big smiles!
Our youngest marshals were 20 month old Elliot and his 4 year old sister Natalie. You might have seen them out on the course keeping their Mum Zoe on her toes – she probably ended up running the same distant as you lot!!!
We also had a lot of youngsters from our Tri Energy Kids section who had eagerly run or mountain biked to their marshal positions! Our oldest marshal….well we wouldn’t like to say! But let’s just say at Tri Energy no-one is too old, or too slow to join us!
When the runners arrived we couldn’t believe how many of you there were!!! An amazing turnout in such cold conditions! It was great to see so many people taking part – from individuals, families, friends, other clubs rocking their club kit, to Sandra PEDERSEN and Heather MORGAN running their 50th parkrun!!
I was a little nervous doing the race briefing which I was surprised about as I’m normally someone who likes to talk; but I needn’t have been nervous. Everyone was really friendly, their were plenty of smiles and a good bit of cheering too (especially when I got to the end of the very long list of marshal names!)
The support out on the course was amazing – we hoped you enjoyed our cheering…..oh and the cow bells courtesy of Caroline and Jacob! We made snowmen out on the course too – did you spot them? We also hope you got to devour one of our biscuits at the end (although our marshals near the finish and barcode scanning may have eaten one or two…..or three or four).
There’s too many Tri Energy members to thank for helping both on Saturday and in the lead up to the parkrun takeover but we would like to say a big thank you to Heidi who took some amazing photos of the morning and really captured what the park run is all about. Feel free to tag yourselves in these on Facebook….we think we got everybody!
